Another reason soccer struggles for popularity is there is already an overabundance of mainstream sports in the US. Not only do they have their own version of football which in reality is closer to rugby (NFL), they have basketball (NBA), ice hockey (NHL), baseball (MLB), even NASCAR pulls in huge crowds all over the southern states.
Soccer will become more popular in the United States ONLY when the rules are changed; e.g. make the goal HIGHER, change the clock (count DOWN, not count UP), allow substitutions/change lines while in-play (like ice hockey) and get more AMERICAN players, or at least those who can speak passable English.
